The space agency recently revealed the results of a NASA-sponsored workshop, held in February, in which scientists and engineers gathered to discuss potential “cryobot” mission concepts.
Scientists aim to crack through the icy exteriors of moons in the Solar System, such as Saturn’s moon Enceladus or Jupiter’s moon Europa, and drop a probe inside that can analyze the liquid beneath the ocean.
The cryobot concept that scientists are trying to explore is similar to drilling a hole in the world and involves using a cylindrical device that is sent to the surface of an icy ocean world. The device is expected to melt ice and slowly slide down as water flows around it and refreezes.
These probes, which use “thermal drilling” techniques, are commonly used to investigate glaciers and ice caps on Earth. However, the icy shells on Europa and Enceladus are cold and thick, and their behavior is poorly understood.
The researchers’ focus is on extending existing terrestrial thermal drilling operations to extraterrestrial environments through cryobots and NASA’s Scientific Exploration Subsurface Access Mechanism for Europa (SESAME) and Concepts for Ocean Worlds Life Detection Technology (COLDTech) programs.
