Good evening. We are interrupting regular programming for a major developing story coming out of Pakistan’s capital.

Tragedy has struck Islamabad today as a powerful suicide bombing targeted a mosque during Friday prayers, leaving a scene of devastation and mass casualties. Here is the situation as we know it right now.

THE HEADLINES

ON THE GROUND: WHAT HAPPENED

According to preliminary reports from Islamabad Police and security officials, a suicide bomber attempted to enter the main hall of the Imambargah. Security personnel reportedly stopped the attacker at the gate, at which point the assailant detonated their explosive vest.

Witnesses describe a scene of absolute chaos. One survivor, Zahir Hussain, told reporters he was parking his car when the explosion threw him to the ground. “After that, for a while there was horrific silence, then what I saw… I don’t have words to explain it,” he said.

Video footage from the scene shows extensive damage to the mosque’s entrance, with emergency responders and local residents frantically rushing the injured into private vehicles and ambulances.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE

An emergency has been declared at all major hospitals in the capital, specifically the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and the Polyclinic, which are currently overwhelmed with casualties. Calls for blood donations are being broadcast across the city.

Security forces, including the Rangers and Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), have cordoned off the Tarlai area and are conducting a sweep for any secondary devices or accomplices.

ANALYSIS: THE SECURITY SITUATION

This is a significant escalation. Islamabad, the federal capital, is usually the most secure city in the country. However, this marks the second major incident in the city in recent months (following the district court blast in November 2025).

Analysts point to a troubling surge in violence across Pakistan, following recent clashes in Balochistan and ongoing tensions on the western border. The ability of militants to strike a soft target in the capital’s suburbs, despite heightened security for the foreign dignitary’s visit, will be a major point of concern for the security establishment in the coming days.

ANCHOR SIGN-OFF: We are waiting for further updates from the Interior Ministry regarding the identity of the bomber. We will bring you those details as soon as they cross the wire. For now, the death toll stands at 31, with the nation in mourning.
