Valve reveals this year’s best-selling and most-played games on Steam.
Valve on Wednesday offered a behind-the-scenes look at Steam’s biggest games of 2023, revealing which titles are dominating the sales charts on PC gaming’s biggest digital platform. Valve also revealed which games Steam users – and Steam Deck owners – played the most this year, with Baldur’s Gate 3, Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, and Sons of the Forest making multiple top 12 lists.
Some of the figures won’t be too surprising to Steam users who pay attention to Valve’s publicly available statistics. Perennial Steam favorites like Counter-Strike 2 (née Counter-Strike: Global Offensive), Dota 2, PUBG: Battlegrounds and Apex Legends were well-represented on the best-selling and most-played games lists. are But 2023 brought new contenders, like The Finals and Lethal Company, to Steam’s most-played games.
Valve does not provide specific sales figures or numbered rankings, but instead displays the top 100 Steam games in several categories, breaking the list of each 100 games into several tiers based on sales or game performance:
Platinum: 1st – 12th
Gould: 13-24
Silver: 25-50
Bronze: 51st – 100th
The company’s data spans from January 1 to December 15 of this year, so top-performing latecomers like The Finals in 2023 missed out on top rankings on most of Valve’s lists. Here’s a breakdown of the biggest, most-played, and best-selling games on Steam this year.
BESTSELLING NEW GAMES ON STEAM IN 2023
Only a third of the 12 best-selling games on Steam this year were actually released in 2023, so Valve highlights newly released bestsellers separately. It also bases the following list on revenue for the first two weeks after launch.

Based on gross revenue in 2023, the top 12 (platinum-rated) games on Steam include paid premium games like Hogwarts Legacy and Starfield, as well as free-to-play titles like Apex Legends and Lost Ark. (Publisher Activision also lists Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, and Warzone as Call of Duty on Steam only, to explain the naming convention.)

In the “gold” sales tier, appearing just outside the top 12, are great games like Dead by Daylight and Grand Theft Auto 5, as well as new releases like Resident Evil 4 Remake and EA Sports FC 24.
MOST PLAYED STEAM GAMES OF 2023
The most played Steam games of 2023 are a mostly familiar list, with venerable favorites Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and Destiny 2 rounding out the top 12. With challengers like Legacy, Goose Goose Dick.
Here are the top 12 most-played Steam games of the year, all of which reached over 300,000 concurrent players. (Valve said it excluded games with “short spikes in player count due to things like games and free weekends”.)

MOST PLAYED GAMES ON STEAM DECK IN 2023
Steam users played many familiar favorites on the go this year, including blockbusters Baldur’s Gate 3 and Starfield, as well as smaller fare like Dave the Diver and Vampire Survivors. Due almost certainly to Valve offering the original Half-Life for free in celebration of its 25th anniversary, it also made it into the top 12 most-played Steam deck games.
